Optimizing Oilseed Softening for Efficient Extraction

Date:Jul 19th, 2024
Dingsheng Machine specialize in providing advanced softening equipment designed to optimize oilseed processing and extraction. Softening is a crucial step in oilseed processing, where the moisture and temperature of the seeds are adjusted to achieve optimal pliability, ensuring the extraction process is efficient and productive. Below, we outline the role of softening, key indicators, and equipment selection for optimal results.

Purpose and Benefits of Oilseed Softening

Enhance Pliability
Softening adjusts the moisture and temperature of oilseeds to achieve the desired pliability, reducing excessive powder formation during flaking. By regulating moisture and heat, softening allows water and heat to penetrate the cellular structure of oilseeds, softening their texture for improved flaking.

Softening Indicators
The specific indicators for softening vary based on oilseed type and the equipment used. The general principle is that oilseeds with lower oil and moisture content require higher softening temperatures, while those with higher oil and moisture content need lower temperatures.

Soybean Softening Indicators:
Time: About 20 minutes in a softening pot or 10–15 minutes in a rotary dryer.
Moisture and Temperature: Generally, moisture is controlled at around 15%, with a temperature of approximately 80°C. If moisture is higher, the temperature can be lowered but should not fall below 60°C. If moisture reaches 18%, increase the temperature.
Post-Softening: Soybeans should not have a white core and should feel soft and pliable when pressed.

Cottonseed Softening Indicators:
Moisture and Temperature: Optimal moisture content is 10%–12%, with a softening temperature around 50°C.
Time: Approximately 10 minutes.

Rapeseed Softening Indicators:
Time: Generally about 10 minutes.
Moisture and Temperature: Moisture post-softening should be 10%–12%, with temperatures between 50°C and 60°C. If raw material moisture is already 9%, increase the temperature slightly.

Selecting Softening Equipment

Softening Pots: These are similar to layer-type steaming and roasting pots but with fewer layers, typically 2–3.

Softening Boxes: Simple equipment with a rectangular base, external steam jackets, and internal steam heating pipes, primarily used for soybean softening.

Steam-Jacketed Screw Conveyors (Steam Augers): These feature steam injection pipes at the screw shaft's center or the bottom of the conveyor trough, allowing moisture to be added as needed. They offer uniform heating, thorough softening, and a simple process.

Operational Requirements for Softening Equipment:
Moisture Adjustment: It is crucial to know the initial moisture content of the raw materials to adjust appropriately. Add more water if the moisture content is low, and add less if it is high. If the moisture is too high, no additional water should be added. Accurate moisture content knowledge is essential for effective softening.

Temperature Control: To achieve the desired pliability, adjust the moisture and temperature accordingly. Higher moisture requires lower temperatures, while lower moisture necessitates higher temperatures. Control the temperature based on the raw material's moisture content.

Ensure Sufficient Softening Time: Adequate time is needed for oilseeds to absorb moisture and heat evenly. The softening time should be determined based on the specific softening equipment used.
