There are generally two methods for producing oil from rapeseed: mechanical pressing and solvent extraction.
Mechanical pressing, also known as physical pressing, is a traditional method of oil extraction that involves using mechanical force to squeeze oil from the rapeseeds. It includes three types of equipment: manual presses, hydraulic presses, and screw presses. The screw press is widely used today and has the advantages of high processing capacity, continuous production, low labor intensity, and high oil yield compared to manual presses and hydraulic presses. The screw press is suitable for pressing a variety of oilseeds, such as rapeseed, soybean, cottonseed, and rice bran. In particular, for some oilseeds that need to maintain their natural flavor or performance characteristics, such as Camellia seed, sesame, cocoa beans, and castor seeds, the screw press should also be used for oil extraction.
Solvent extraction, which uses chemical solvents such as hexane to extract oil from rapeseeds, is a more advanced method of oil extraction than mechanical pressing. It has the advantages of high oil extraction efficiency, good quality of the residue, low processing cost, good production environment, and fewer operators. Solvent extraction is widely used in oil production in many countries around the world.
Pre-pressing extraction is a method used for high-oil-content oilseeds. It involves first extracting some of the oil by mechanical pressing and then extracting the remaining oil from the pressed cake by solvent extraction.
The oil production process of most large and medium-sized rapeseed oil factories uses the high-temperature pre-pressing-extraction method. The general process for rapeseed solvent extraction includes: rapeseed cleaning, softening, rolling, steaming, pre-pressing, extraction, and refining.
The rapeseed oil produced by small-scale oil presses with a strong aroma is called "strong-flavored rapeseed oil" or "small-scale rapeseed oil". The temperature of the fried rapeseed in small-scale pressing can reach 150 degrees Celsius. Compared with cold pressing, small-scale pressing is hot pressing, and the equipment used mainly includes hydraulic presses and 95-type screw presses. The heat denaturation of the pressed cake is very high. Except for a small amount used directly for feed or fertilizer, most of the pressed cake is sold to large-scale oil processing enterprises for solvent extraction to extract the remaining oil.
Cold pressing refers to the low-temperature pressing of rapeseeds without steaming or frying the seeds. This method uses mechanical force to extract oil from the raw material. Cold-pressed rapeseed oil is considered to be healthier and of better quality because it retains more of the natural nutrients and flavor of the rapeseed.
